General symptoms of an abscess include swelling, redness, inflammation, and pain or tenderness in the affected area. These are the classic symptoms of a skin abscess, also known as a boil.
Symptoms of internal abscesses, such as a brain abscess or a liver abscess, differ depending on the type of abscess and the area of the body that is affected. Symptoms can include fever, chills, and severe pain to affected area. For example, a pancreatic abscess results in severe abdominal pain. A tooth abscess results in severe gum and mouth pain, and a rectal abscess results in severe rectal pain.
If an abscess is not recognized and treated promptly, it can lead to gangrene and permanent tissue and organ damage. The infection from an abscess can also spread to the bloodstream, and lead to serious, even life-threatening complications, such as sepsis, kidney failure, and death. Symptoms of complications may include confusion, lethargy, delirium, seizures, low blood pressure, shock, loss of consciousness, and coma....more about Abscess »
