Glossary for Acne Vulgaris

  • Acne: Pimples and blackheads on the face and skin.
  • Acne-like conditions: Medical conditions similar to acne or highly related to acne.
  • Blisters: Blistering of the skin.
  • Boil: Infected puseous hair follicle on the skin
  • Carbuncle: Group of multiple boils
  • Folliculitis: An inflammatory reaction which occurs in the follicles
  • Gynandroblastoma: A type of ovarian tumor that causes feminizing and masculinizing effects of estrogen and androgen.
  • Perioral dermatitis: A rash consisting of itchy red bumps that occur around the mouth area. The cheeks and even eye area may eventually become involved. The cause of the condition is not well understood but topical glucocorticoids can dramatically worsen the condition or even cause the condition.
  • Rosacea: Inflammatory rash affecting cheeks, nose, forehead, chin
  • Rosacea-like conditions: Medical conditions highly related to or similar to rosacea.
  • Skin bumps: Bumps or lumps on the skin.
  • Skin conditions: Any condition that affects the skin
  • Skin nodules: The occurrence of nodules that are located on the skin
  • Tinea: A general term for various fungal skin afflictions; often incorrectly called ringworm.
