Symptoms of Acute Pancreatitis
Symptoms of Acute Pancreatitis: Introduction
The types and severity of symptoms of acute pancreatitis vary between individuals depending on a variety of factors, such as age, general health, medical history, and the presence of complications. Acute pancreatitis is the result of an inflammation of the pancreas, which causes typical symptoms, such as severe constant abdominal pain, sometimes with back pain. The pain is generally worse with eating or drinking and may be somewhat relieved by sitting up and leaning forward.
Other symptoms may include abdominal swelling, fever, weight loss, pallor, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.
Serious complications of acute pancreatitis include the development of infections in the pancreas, malabsorption, malnutrition, kidney failure, and pseudocyst. Symptoms of these complications may include lack of urine, fever, weight loss, sepsis, internal hemorrhage, hypotension, and shock.
Acute pancreatitis may also lead to chronic pancreatitis. This disease can lead to other complications, such as pancreatic cancer and diabetes due to the destruction of the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin....more about Acute Pancreatitis »

Article Excerpts About Symptoms of Acute Pancreatitis:
Acute pancreatitis usually begins with pain in the upper abdomen that
may last for a few days. The pain may be severe and may become
constant--just in the abdomen--or it may reach to the back and other
areas. It may be sudden and intense or begin as a mild pain that gets
worse when food is eaten. Someone with acute pancreatitis often looks and
feels very sick. Other symptoms may include
- swollen and tender abdomen
- rapid pulse
Severe cases may cause dehydration and low blood pressure. The heart,
lungs, or kidneys may fail. If bleeding occurs in the pancreas, shock and
sometimes even death follow.
