Glossary for Acute Tracheitis

  • Airway Obstruction: A blockage in the breathing tubes. The blockage can occur for many different reasons such as tumors, severe allergic reaction, bacterial infections, foreign bodies or trauma. The degree of obstruction will determine how seriously breathing is impaired.
  • Bacterial diseases: Diseases caused by a bacterial infection
  • Breathing difficulties: Various types of breathing difficulty (dyspnea).
  • Chest pain: Pain in the chest area.
  • Conditions involving a pathogen: Medical conditions involving some type of pathogen, such as a virus or bacteria.
  • Earache: Pain in the ear called "otalgia"
  • Fever: Elevation of the body temperature above the normal 37 degrees celsius
  • Intercostal retractions: Intercostal retractions are the inward movement of the muscles between the ribs as a result of reduced pressure in the chest cavity
  • Respiratory conditions: Any condition that affects the respiratory system
  • Toxic Shock Syndrome: Severe immune reaction causing shock
