Glossary for Agyria pachygyria polymicrogyria

  • Agyria: A condition which is characterized by the malformation or absence of the convolutions of the cerebral cortex
  • Brain conditions: Medical conditions that affect the brain

  • Intellectual or developmental disabilities: Disorders of physical or intellectual development.
  • Mental retardation: A very rare syndrome characterized mainly by mental retardation, hypogonadism, diabetes and facial and skull abnormalities.

  • Pachygyria: A condition which is characterized by the presence of thick convolutions of the cerebral cortex
  • Polymicrogyria: Polymicrogyria refers to abnormal brain development where the brain has abnormally smooth gyri (convolutions) on the surface of the brain. The anomaly is often occurs as part of another syndrome. Patients can present with a wide range and severity of symptoms which can make the prognosis difficult to determine.
