Glossary for Alport syndrome, dominant type

  • Alport syndrome, recessive type: A rare syndrome characterized by kidney problems and hearing loss. The condition is inherited as a recessive trait.
  • Blood in urine: Hematuria is blood in the urine.
  • Genetic Disease: Any disease that is handed down to oneself through the chromosomes of ones parents
  • Glomerulonephritis: Kidney disease where the kidney's have problems removing waste material and excessive fluid.
  • Kidney abnormalities: Any abnormality of the function or anatomical structure of the kidney
  • Kidney conditions: Any condition affecting the kidney organs.
  • Kidney damage: Any damage that occurs to the kidneys
  • Kidney failure: Total failure of the kidneys to filter waste
  • Kidney symptoms: Symptoms affecting one or both kidneys.
  • Sensorineural hearing loss: Hearing loss due to abnormal functioning or damage to the hearing nerve or the cochlea (inner ear) or the part of the brain that processes sound. The hearing problem may be present at birth or may be acquired through such things as aging, excessive noise or diseases such as meningitis.
  • Urinary system conditions: Medical conditions affecting urination, urinary organs or the urinary system.
