Glossary for Alstrom disease

  • Acanthosis nigricans: It is a brown to black, poorly defined, velvety hyperpigmentation of the skin usually present in the posterior and lateral folds of the neck, the axilla, groin, umbilicus and other areas.
  • Baldness: Lack of hair where it usually grows. Usually on the head.
  • Blindness: The inability to see out of the eyes
  • Cardiomyopathy: Any disease of the heart muscle
  • Coronary heart disease: Disease affecting the heart's arteries (narrowed arteries)
  • Deafness: Inability to hear sounds.
  • Diabetes-like conditions: Medical conditions that appear to be similar to diabetes.
  • Ear and Hearing conditions: Medical conditions affecting the ears or the hearing systems.
  • Endocrine system conditions: Medical conditions affecting the endocrine systems, such as the related hormones or glands.
  • Eye and vision conditions: Medical conditions affecting the eyes or the vision systems.
  • Genetic Disease: Any disease that is handed down to oneself through the chromosomes of ones parents
  • Kidney conditions: Any condition affecting the kidney organs.
  • Nerve deafness: A condition which is characterized by deafness caused by a problem with the neurological supply
  • Obesity: An increase in the body weight greater than that required for normal function that is characterised by the accumulation of excessive fat
  • Obesity-like conditions: Medical conditions similar to obesity or highly related to obesity.
  • Retinal degeneration: A group of disorders involving degeneration of the retina. Retinitis pigmentosa and macular degeneration are examples. The disorder is usually inherited.
  • Urinary system conditions: Medical conditions affecting urination, urinary organs or the urinary system.
  • Weight conditions: Disorders affecting body weight, including overweight and underweight conditions.
