Anemia, Hemolytic, Warm Antibody: A rare autoimmune condition where the body's defense system attacks and destroys red blood cells. The onset of the condition is triggered by temperatures 37ºC or higher. The severity of the disorder is variable. Treatments for Anemia, Hemolytic, Warm Antibody

  • Treatment depends on the cause and usually involves symptomatic and supportive measures. Corticosteroid drugs, IV immune globulin and immunosuppressants may be used. Removal of the spleen may help in some cases. Withdrawal of drugs or cessation of blood transfusions may also help if they are the causative factors
  • Identification and management of precipitating causes eg medication, infection, SLE
  • Corticosteroids
  • Folic acid - as active haemolysis consumes folate
  • Blood transfusion - avoid unless absolutely necessary ie angina or cardiac decompensation. Patients with AIHA are usually difficult to crossmatch
