Because some types of aneurysms can be life-threatening, prompt diagnosis and treatment of the condition is key to maintaining health and preserving life. The fatality rate of ruptured brain aneurysm, or ruptured aortic aneurysm is about 50 percent.
Ideally, aneurysms should be treated before they rupture and cause serious life-threatening complications, such as hypovolemic shock, stroke, coma, and death.
Treatment of an aneurysm varies depending on the size, location, and type of aneurysm. An expanding or enlarging aneurysm in the aorta often requires emergency treatment.
For some types of aneurysms that are not large or do not threaten health, a "watch and wait" approach might be taken. This requires regular medical care and testing, such as ultrasound imaging, to monitor the growth the aneurysm. Surgery is not always the best option for these types of aneurysms, because the risk of serious complications from the surgery may be greater than the risk of complications for small to medium sized aneurysms.
Brains aneurysms or aortic aneurysm that are at risk for rupturing and causing serious complications are generally treated with surgery. For an aortic aneurysm, open surgery repairs or replaces the section of ballooned artery wall with a tube called a stent-graft. Some aneurysms may be repaired with endovascular surgery, which is less invasive than open surgical repair and requires a shorter recovery time.
For a brain aneurysm, surgery involves clipping or sealing off of the aneurysm from the blood flow in the artery.
