Glossary for Aspergillosis

  • AIDS-Related Opportunistic Infections: A term given to HIV patients who have a low CD4 count (below 200) which means that they have low levels of a type of immune cell called T-cells. AIDS patients tend to develop opportunistic infections and cancers. Opportunistic infections are infections that would not normally affect a person with a healthy immune system. The HIV virus is a virus that attacks the body's immune system.
  • Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis: An allergic reaction to a particular fungus called Aspergillus.
  • Allergy-like conditions: Medical conditions with similar effects to those of allergies.
  • Asthma: Repeated attacks of breathing difficulty.
  • Asthma-like conditions: Medical conditions similar to asthma, or having similar symptoms.
  • Bone infection: Inflammation of the bone also known as osteomyelitis.
  • Brain infection: Infection of the brain including encephalitis
  • Bronchiectasis: Chronic bronchiole dilation from secretions and blockages.
  • Bronchitis: Bronchitis is an inflammation of the air passages within the lungs. It occurs when the trachea and the large and small bronchi within the lungs become inflamed
  • COPD: Severe obstruction of bronchial air flow typically from bronchitis and/or emphysema.
  • Chronic Sinusitis: Chronic form of sinusitis, inflammation of the sinus cavities.
  • Churg-Strauss Syndrome: A condition characterized by blood vessel inflammation that occurs throughout the body.
  • Conditions involving a pathogen: Medical conditions involving some type of pathogen, such as a virus or bacteria.
  • Cough: The noise produced from the sudden expulsion of air from the lungs
  • Fever: Elevation of the body temperature above the normal 37 degrees celsius
  • Fungal infections: Any condition caused by fungus.
  • Lung symptoms: Symptoms affecting one or both lungs.
  • Nosocomial infections: Any infection that originates in a hospital
  • Pneumonia: Infection of the lung by bacteria, viruses or fungus.
  • Pneumonia, eosinophilic: Infiltration of the lungs by eosinophils (type of white blood cell) which can be caused by asthma or as a reaction to certain drugs or parasitic infections.
  • Sinusitis: Sinusitis is an inflammation of the paranasal sinuses.
  • Skin infection: A condition which is characterized by an infection which occurs on the skin
  • Ulcer: A local defect in the mucosa
