Conditions: Chorea

What is Chorea?
Chorea is a neurological disorder characterized by involuntary spasmodic movements of the body. Movements are jerky and arrhythmic, and may involve the whole body. Other symptoms include muscle weakness, clumsiness, and gait disturbances. Chorea may be inherited, or the consequence of an earlier infection or autoimmune disease. The disorder is most commonly associated with Huntington's disease (or Huntington's chorea) and Sydenham's chorea (an inflammatory reaction sometimes occurring after a streptococcal infection), although it may be associated with other conditions as well.

Is there any treatment?
There is no standard course of treatment for chorea. Treatment depends on the type of chorea and the associated disorder. Treatment for Huntington's disease is supportive, while treatment for Syndenham's chorea usually involves drugs to treat the infection, followed by prophylactic drug therapy.

What is the prognosis?
The prognosis for individuals with chorea varies depending on the type of chorea and the associated disorder. Huntington's disease is a hereditary, progressive and fatal neurological disorder. Syndenham's chorea is treatable and curable.

What research is being done?
The NINDS supports research on movement disorders such as chorea. The goals of this research are to increase understanding of these disorders and to find ways to prevent and treat them.
