Glossary for Barrett Esophagus

  • Barrett syndrome: Barrett's syndrome refers to cellular changes in the lower portion of the oesophagus as a result of chronic reflux. The changes in the cells of the esophagus can lead to cancer of the esophagus (adenocarcinoma).
  • Chest pain: Pain in the chest area.
  • Chronic cough: The chronic noisy sudden expulsion of air from the respiratory tract
  • Digestive Diseases: Diseases that affect the digestive system
  • Esophagus diseases: Diseases affecting the esophagus
  • Heartburn: Pain from stomach acid coming back up the esophagus
  • Laryngitis: Laryngitis is an inflammation of the mucous membrane lining the larynx which is located in the upper part of the respiratory tract.
  • Mungan syndrome: A recessively inherited disorder characterized by heart abnormalities and gastrointestinal abnormalities. Death has occurred in some cases during the late teenage years.
  • Regurgitation: The backflow of stomach contents and gas from stomach back into oesophagus or mouth
  • Swallowing difficulty: Difficulty or pain when swallowing
  • Vomiting blood: Blood appearing in vomited material.
  • Weight loss: Loss of body weight.
