Symptoms of Blepharitis: Introduction

Symptoms of blepharitis include reddened appearance of the both the upper and lower eyelids, most pronounced at the edges of the eyelids. There is generally a discharge and crusting of mucus around the eyes. The eyelids are also itchy and swollen and the skin on them is scaly and flaky. The flakes from the skin on the eyelids often gets into the eyes and can cause conjunctivitis, an inflammation of the conjunctiva of the eyes.

Symptoms of conjunctivitis include reddening of the eye and discharge and crusting of the eye. There also may be a general discomfort in the affected eye and a sensitivity to light (photosensitivity).

Other complications include the development of a sty, chalazion, dry eye, sores or ulcers along the edges of the eyelids and loss of eyelashes. A secondary bacterial infection of the eyelid can also occur. Symptoms can include increased swelling, redness, pain in the eyelids and possibly fever.

Another complication of blepharitis is the development of corneal ulcers. Symptoms of corneal ulcers include eye pain, discharge from the eye, redness, sensitivity to light (photosensitivity), and impaired vision. A rare complication of corneal ulcer is blindness....more about Blepharitis »
