Glossary for Childbirth

  • Anemia: Reduced ability of blood to carry oxygen from various possible causes.
  • Birth asphyxia: Hypoxia during passage of birth.
  • Brain damage: Damage to the brain from various causes
  • Breast abscess: Pus-filled abscess in the breast
  • Cerebral Palsy: Any brain disorder causing movement disability
  • Congenital conditions: Any condition that you are born with such as birth defects or genetic diseases.
  • Congenital heart defects: Heart defects that a baby is born with.
  • Cystocele: Bladder falls down into the vagina.
  • Deep vein thrombosis: Blood clot in vein, often in calf muscle vein in the leg.
  • Diarrhea: Loose or watery stool.
  • Diseases contagious during childbirth: Diseases that are contagious during childbirth
  • Fecal incontinence: Leaking or poorly controlled bowel motions
  • IBIDS syndrome: A rare inherited skin disorder characterized by red, dry, scaly skin (I - ichthyosis), brittle hair (B), impaired physical and mental development (I), decreased fertility (D) and short stature (S). It is the same as PIBIDS syndrome but doesn't involve photosensitivity.
  • Nausea: The queasy feeling of nausea and often also vomiting.
  • Neonatal Jaundice: Common skin yellowing jaundice in newborn babies.
  • PIBIDS syndrome: A rare inherited skin disorder characterized by photosensitivity (P), red, dry, scaly skin (I - ichthyosis), brittle hair (B), impaired physical and mental development (I), decreased fertility (D) and short stature (S). It is the same as IBIDS syndrome but involves photosensitivity.
  • Pain: A feeling of suffering, agony, distress caused by the stimulation of pain fibres in the nervous system
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease: Infection of the womb and fallopian tubes.
  • Peritonitis: Inflammation of the lining of the abdominal cavity
  • Permanent brain damage: A condition which is characterized by damage to the brains function that is permanent in nature
  • Placenta conditions: Any condition that affects the placenta
  • Pregnancy: The condition of supporting a fetus from conception till birth.
  • Pregnancy-related conditions: Any condition that is related to or caused by pregnancy
  • Pulmonary embolism: Blocked lung blood vessel often from a blood clot.
  • Stillbirth: Where a woman delivers a child who is dead
  • Stroke: Serious brain event from bleeding or blood clots.
  • Superficial thrombophlebitis: Inflammation of a vein wall
  • Tetanus: A disease caused by chemicals which are produced by a bacterium (clostridium tetani) and are toxic to the nerves. The infection usually occurs when the bacteria enter the body through a deep wound - these bacteria are anaerobic and hence don't need oxygen to survive.
  • Thrombosis: Blood clot occurring in a blood vessel
  • Thurston syndrome: A rare syndrome characterized primarily by an extra finger or toe on the side opposite to the thumb and big toe as well as an upper lip cleft.
  • Urinary Incontinence: Reduced ability to control urine flow.
  • Uterus conditions: Any condition that affects the female uterus
  • Vagina conditions: Any condition that affects the female vagina
  • Vaginal discharge: Discharge from the vagina as a symptom
  • Women-only conditions: Conditions affecting women (females), but not males.
  • Womens health conditions: Medical conditions related to women's health.
