Dimorphic anemia: Introduction

Dimorphic anemia: Dimorphic refers to anemia that has two different causes acting together e.g. iron deficiency as well as a Vitamin B12 deficiency. More detailed information about the symptoms, causes, and treatments of Dimorphic anemia is available below.

Treatments for Dimorphic anemia

• Varies depending on underlying cause. Identify and treat underlying cause. Erythropoietin administration can stimulate the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells but this is only used in severe cases
• Treatment of anemia is very much dependant upon the type, cause and severity of the anemia, as well as individual patient factors. Treatments include:
  • Investigation, diagnosis and management of underlying causes. Eg menorrhagia, coeliac disease, nutritional deficiency
  • Identification and cessation of medications that may be causing anemia, often aplastic anemia
  • Dietary review and management - for nutritional causes of anemia
