Drug-induced liver disease

Drug-induced liver disease: Introduction

Drug-induced liver disease: Drug-induced liver diseases are diseases of the liver that are caused by physician-prescribed medications, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, hormones, herbs, illicit ("recreational") drugs, and environmental toxins. More detailed information about the symptoms, causes, and treatments of Drug-induced liver disease is available below.

Symptoms of Drug-induced liver disease

Treatments for Drug-induced liver disease

  • No specific treatment is indicated for drug-induced hepatic disease. Treatment is largely supportive and based on symptomatology. The first step is to discontinue the suspected drug
  • Treatment of hepatotoxicity is dependant upon the causative agent, the degree of liver dysfunction, and the age and general health of the patient. Treatments include:
    • Discontinuation of causative medication
    • Monitoring of patient and regular review of liver function - where liver dysfunction is mild to moderate, and liver function is improving
    • Abstinence from alcohol and avoidance of medication that may contribute to further liver damage
