Treatments for Drug-induced liver disease
- No specific treatment is indicated for drug-induced hepatic disease. Treatment is largely supportive and based on symptomatology. The first step is to discontinue the suspected drug
- Treatment of hepatotoxicity is dependant upon the causative agent, the degree of liver dysfunction, and the age and general health of the patient. Treatments include:
- Discontinuation of causative medication
- Monitoring of patient and regular review of liver function - where liver dysfunction is mild to moderate, and liver function is improving
- Abstinence from alcohol and avoidance of medication that may contribute to further liver damage
