The Colon Cleanse Detox Diet alleges that it will cleanse the colon and boost energy; eliminate constipation; improve skin, hair, and nails; put an end to bloating, gas, and flatulence; eliminate bad breath; and help dieters to lose weight while increasing the quality of life. The Colon Cleanse Detox Diet consists of basic and advanced recommendations. These include increasing fiber in the diet and combining certain foods groups together during meals. They also include not mixing carbohydrates with proteins in a single meal, which eliminates entire foods groups from meals. In addition, the diet recommends eating only fruit for breakfast. There is a lack of dairy products, such as milk and cheese, in the diet potentially resulting in a calcium deficiency and the development of such medical conditions as osteoporosis. The Colon Cleanse Detox Diet also recommends the elimination of processed foods high in sugars, refined flours, and artificial preservatives. Other guidelines include eating at regular meal times, drinking warm or hot liquids with meals, being conscious of portion sizes, chewing food thoroughly, and relaxing as you eat. The diet also says that it is important to eat the easiest-to-digest foods first in each meal.
When considering the Colon Cleanse Detox Diet, it is important to remember that rapid weight loss is not recommended by nutrition and medical experts and that the most effective and safe weight loss diet plans include enough calories to allow dieters to lose about one to two pounds per week. Rapid weight loss is often initially the loss of water, not fat. Diets that severely restrict calories and/or carbohydrates can also lead to rebound weight gain. This is due to the fact that severe calorie restriction results in the body going into "starvation" mode, which leads to a lower metabolism, the body's way to try to prevent complete starvation. This often leads to gaining even more weight than was lost after the diet plan has been discontinued. This encourages "yo-yo" dieting patterns that medical experts say are unhealthy and do not result in effective long-term weight control. Severe calorie and nutrient restriction can also lead to low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), low blood pressure, dizziness, and weakness. They can also result in ketoacidosis, a condition in which severe restriction of calories or carbohydrates leads to dangerously high levels of acids called ketones build up in the blood and can poison the body in some people. In addition, there is no proof that any particular diet plan is any better at detoxifying than the body's own organs. An effective weight loss plan does not eliminate entire food groups and encourages the consumption of a wide variety of fresh foods from all the foods groups that are low in saturated fats, trans fats and added sugars. These also include lean sources of protein, fruits and vegetables, low fat-dairy products, whole grain carbohydrates, and healthy fats, such as olive oil. Good diet plans also advocate for an overall healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, and provides support services to help people stay on track. Any diet may have the potential to be harmful to some people, so consultation with a health care provider before starting any diet plan and exercise program is recommended.
