There are a many versions of a high fiber diet, some designed for weight loss and some for treatment of certain digestive tract diseases. A high fiber diet is part of the treatment plan for digestive diseases, such as irritable bowel syndrome and diverticulosis. Fiber is also one key element in the prevention and/or treatment of high cholesterol, diabetes, and colon cancer. High fiber diets designed for weight loss rely on fiber, which is very filling, to help dieters to feel satisfied with high-fiber, low calorie, nutritious foods, such as vegetables, without filling up on high calorie foods, such as sweets, junk foods, and desserts. One high fiber diet for weight loss is the F-Plan diet. High concentrations of fiber are found in plant foods, such as whole grain breads and cereals, beans, legumes, and in many fruits. Vegetable and fruit juices, however, are low in fiber. Fiber in the diet helps keep the digestive track healthy by helping the intestines to keep food moving through the intestines. Fiber also absorbs water and produces softer stools that are easier to pass. This prevents constipation and straining to pass stool, and can help prevent and ease haemorrhoids.
People with symptoms of digestive diseases should be evaluated by a health care provider to ensure an appropriate diagnosis and treatment plan is developed for the individual. If it is determined that a high fiber diet is a good treatment, the diet can easily include adequate nutrition. In addition to high fiber plants foods, the diet should include a well-balanced selection of foods from all the food groups, include low-fat dairy products, lean meats and proteins, and healthy oils, such as olive oil. A credible weight loss high-fiber diet includes enough calories to allow dieters to lose about one to two pounds per week and rapid weight loss is not recommended. Higher levels of fiber in the diet may produce gas and flatulence and interfere with the absorption of certain nutritional minerals. Consultation with a registered dietician may be needed. As with any diet plan, optimal results for health are achieved when a well balanced diet plan is combined with a sensible exercise program and healthy lifestyle changes. All diets have the potential to be harmful for some people, so consultation with a licensed health care provider before starting a diet plan and exercise program is recommended.
