NutriSystem

Introduction: NutriSystem

The NutriSystem program is a commercial, multifaceted diet program. The NutriSystem program states that it offers dieters the perfect combination of variety, nutrition, hunger control, and convenience and that it helps dieters to learn healthy eating habits for life. Dieters enrolled in NutriSystem eat prepackaged, frozen foods and meals that they order from a variety of pre-selected or customized 28-day plans of eating. Foods are delivered to the home. A meal planner is provided and pre-packaged foods can be combined with some fresh grocery foods to complete the diet. These include fresh fruit, dairy, and vegetables. The pre-packaged meals help dieters to learn healthy portion control and the plan encourages dieters to eat often throughout the day to prevent cravings. Eating plans are available in customized versions for men and women as well as for older adults, people with diabetes, and vegetarians. NutriSystem also provides support through a free online community and weight loss trackers and tools, such as a food diary, eating out guide, exercise plan and unlimited counseling by their trained counselors. NutriSystem entrees and desserts feature low-glycemic index carbohydrates, protein, fiber, Omega-3s fatty acids, and low sodium, low fat and not trans fat foods. The low-glycemic index carbohydrates, also known as "good carbs" which are high in fiber are digested more slowly than processed carbs, such as white flour and sugar, which help dieters to feel satisfied and fuller longer. NutriSystem foods include appropriate portions of favorite foods, such as pizza, pasta, chips, and chocolates to help satisfy cravings. Dieters can choose the foods they like the most and are not required to buy any certain prepackaged foods. The NutriSystem foods are convenient and do not require dieter to count calories or measure foods. Online counselor support is offered 24/7.

The NutriSystem can become costly. The most inexpensive meals are $3 per meal. This cost may however, be less than some people spend on eating out or groceries each month. As with any diet plan, optimal results for health and weight loss and control are achieved when a well balanced diet plan that encourages gradual weight loss is combined with a sensible exercise program and healthy lifestyle changes. Rapid weight loss is not recommended and the diet should contain enough calories to enable a dieter to lose about one to two pounds a weeks. All diets have the potential to be harmful for some people, so consultation with a health care provider before starting a diet plan and exercise program is recommended.
