An ear infection often occurs in conjunction with a variety of symptoms that vary depending on the specific form of ear infection. Symptoms may also vary in character and intensity between individuals.
Symptoms of an infection of the outer ear canal (otitis externa or swimmer's ear) include ear pain when touching the outside of the ear. The pain can be extreme, and there may also be pus draining from the ear. There may be enough pus to block the ear canal and cause some hearing impairment.
Symptoms of an infection of the middle ear (otitis media) include ear pain, a feeling of fullness in the ear, fever, chills and hearing loss. In chronic otitis media there may be pus present in the ear. Infants and young children may tug at their ear, and they may be irritable and not feed or sleep well.
Symptoms of labyrinthitis, which can be cause by a bacterial infection or viral infection of the inner ear, include dizziness, vertigo ringing in the ear, nausea, vomiting and hearing loss.
