The types and severity of symptoms of erythema nodosum vary between individuals depending on a variety of factors. These include age, general health, medical history, and the type of underlying disease that is present.
Erythema nodosum generally begins as painful, red nodules on the shins. These lesions are not open, ulcerated, or draining but can feel warm to the touch. After about a week the lesions change and appear blue or purple in color, then fade to a yellow color, similar to a bruise. Nodules may also appear in other areas, such as the buttocks, ankles, thighs, and arms. Other symptoms may include fever, malaise, and joint pain or achiness, and joint swelling.
Erythema nodosum does not generally result in serious complications. However, it often occurs with serious diseases or conditions, such as streptococcus infection, hepatitis B, mononucleosis, tuberculosis, leukemia, rheumatic fever, and ulcerative colitis.
