Food Additive Adverse reaction -- citric acid intolerance: An intolerance to citric acid is an adverse reaction (not an immune response) by the body to citric acid or foods containing citric acid. Citric acid can be found naturally in foods but is also frequently used as an additive to various foods. The adverse reaction results from the body's inability to metabolize the food. The amount of citric acid required to trigger the onset of symptoms and the nature and severity of symptoms may vary considerably between patients.

Article Excerpts about Food Additive Adverse reaction -- citric acid intolerance
This difference
between the clinically proven prevalence of food allergy and the
public perception of the problem is in part due to reactions called
"food intolerances" rather than food allergies. A food allergy, or
hypersensitivity, is an abnormal response to a food that is
triggered by the immune system. The immune system is not responsible
for the symptoms of a food intolerance, even though these symptoms
can resemble those of a food allergy. (Source: excerpt from Food Allergy and Intolerances, NIAID Fact Sheet: NIAID)
