The Cervix and Pregnancy

Introduction: The Cervix and Pregnancy

The cervix is the tissue that creates and controls the opening between the uterus and the vagina. The cervix is located in the lower third portion of the uterus. During a normal pregnancy the cervix closes to keep the fetus in the uterus until it has developed and matured sufficiently for birth. During labor, the cervix opens, or widens to allow for the delivery of the fetus from the uterus to the vagina. When a cervix is weak, known as incompetent cervix, it can lead to miscarriage or premature delivery.
