Symptoms of Gastritis
Symptoms of Gastritis: Introduction
Symptoms of gastritis can vary depending on the individual and the underlying cause. Symptoms can be mild to severe. Some people may have no symptoms.
Typical symptoms include indigestion, epigastric pain, nausea, and vomiting. Nausea may be described as feelings of wooziness, queasiness, retching, sea-sickness, car-sickness, an upset stomach, and feeling green around the gills. Other symptoms can include heartburn, loss of appetite, and abdominal pain.
Complications of gastritis include the development of peptic ulcer due to the erosion of the stomach lining. Peptic ulcers can get deep enough to bleed and result in the vomiting of blood (hematemesis) and/or passing tarry black stools (melana) that contain blood.
Persistent bleeding from a peptic ulcer can result in anemia. Symptoms of anemia include fatigue, weakness, and light-headedness. If an ulcer gets deep enough to go through the stomach wall, stomach contents may spill into the abdominal cavity, resulting in a serious complication called peritonitis.
Bloody stools, tarry black stools (melana), and vomiting blood can be symptoms of serious, even life-threatening diseases and conditions. These symptoms are a medical emergency that should be immediately evaluated in an emergency setting....more about Gastritis »
