Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease: Introduction

Reflux refers to the stomach acid rising up the "wrong way" back up the esophagus and sometimes into the mouth. Diagnosis of GERD requires consideration of other possible underlying conditions causing symptoms, such as hiatal hernia. Prolonged GERD can be associated with throat damage such as reflux esophagitis, Barrett's esophagus and also stomach ulcers. ...more »

Causes of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

  • Hiatal hernia
  • Esophagus inflammation
  • Gastroesophageal reflux is a common condition that often occurs without symptoms after meals. In some people, the reflux is related to a problem with the lower esophageal sphincter, a band of muscle fibers that usually closes off the esophagus from the stomach. If this sphincter doesn't close properly, food and liquid can move backward into the esophagus and may cause the symptoms
