Hemiplegic migraine, familial type 2: Introduction
Hemiplegic migraine, familial type 2: A rare inherited form of migraine that characteristically causes temporary paralysis on one side of the body and involves the presence of an aura. A migraine episode may be triggered by minimal trauma to the head. The severity of the disorder is variable with some patients experiencing problems for days. Triggers include tiredness, heat, stress and head injury.

Treatments for Hemiplegic migraine, familial type 2
- Treatment of migraine needs to be individualised, and depends upon the type, frequency and severity of attacks, the age of the patient and other coexisting health problems. Vasoactive agents such as ergots and triptans used to manage other types of migraine should be avoided. Treatments include:
- Patient education regarding prevention and management of attacks
- Avoidance of trigger factors - dietary factors, bright lights, lack of sleep
- Dietary management - chocolate, cheese, red wine, walnuts, tuna, spinach and liver, have all been implicated in triggering migraines
- Avoidance of oral contraceptive pill and hormone replacement therapy which may trigger migraine in some patients
