Glossary for Henoch-Schonlein purpura

  • Abdominal Pain: A condition which is characterized by the sensation of pain that is located in the abdomen
  • Abdominal pain: A condition which is characterized by the sensation of pain that is located in the abdomen
  • Amyloidosis: A rare group of metabolic disorders where a protein called amyloid accumulates in body organs and tissues where it can cause damage and is potentially fatal. Symptoms depend on the organs involved. There are numerous forms of the condition: primary amyloidosis, secondary amyloidosis, hemodialysis-associated amyloidosis and familial amyloidosis.
  • Anorexia: Any type of appetite loss; often refers to anorexia nervosa
  • Appendicitis/acute appendicitis/chronic appendicitis:
  • Autoimmune diseases: A group of disorders in which the primary cause is the an inflammatory reaction caused by the body's own immune system attacking tissues
  • Bleeding and coagulation conditions:
  • Blood conditions: Conditions that affect the blood
  • Circulatory system conditions: Medical conditions affecting the heart and the circulatory system.
  • Complement component 2 deficiency: A rare disorder where a deficiency of a compound called complement component 2 impairs the bodies ability to fight infection and autoimmune disorders.
  • Ehlers-Danlos syndrome: A group of inherited connective tissue disorders primarily involving the joints and skin. There are 11 disorders in the group.
  • Endocarditis: Inflammation of the inner lining of the heart
  • Erythema elevatum diutinum: A rare chronic skin disorder characterized by skin nodules and plaques near joints and on the back of the hands and feet.
  • Fever: Elevation of the body temperature above the normal 37 degrees celsius
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding: Internal bleeding in the digestive tract
  • Glomerulonephritis: Kidney disease where the kidney's have problems removing waste material and excessive fluid.
  • Headache: In medicine a headache or cephalalgia is a symptom of a number of different conditions of the head and sometimes neck. Some of the causes are benign while others are medical emergencies. It ranks among the most common pain complaints
  • Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura: Reduced blood platelets causing visible skin blemishes from bleeding or bruising.
  • Immune disorders: Disorders that affect the immune system
  • Joint pain: Pain affecting the joints
  • Meningococcemia: A rare infectious disease whose main symptoms are upper respiratory tract infection, fever, rash and eye and ear problems.
  • Polyarteritis nodosa: A serious blood vessel disease where small and medium-sized arteries become swollen and damaged and are unable to adequately supply oxygenated blood to various tissues in the body. The disease can occur in a mild form or a serious, rapidly fatal form.
  • Purpura: Various bruising conditions where small blood vessels hemorrhage
  • Rheumatoid arthritis: Autoimmune form of arthritis usually in teens or young adults.
  • Rocky Mountain spotted fever: A bacterial disease caused by Rickettsia rickettsii and transmitted by ticks. The condition causes fever and a characteristic rash and may be fatal in severe or untreated cases.
  • Senile purpura: Bruising condition mostly in the elderly
  • Vasculitis: Inflammation of a blood or lymph vessel
  • Vitamin C deficiency: Indequate vitamin C in the diet
