Symptoms of Hepatitis C
Symptoms of Hepatitis C: Introduction
In most cases there are no symptoms of hepatitis C infection until complications, such as liver damage or cirrhosis develop. This may not occur for ten to forty years after infection with hepatitis C.
If there are earlier symptoms they can include flu-like symptoms, fever, joint aches, nausea, muscle aches and weakness. Other symptoms may include abdominal pain in the right upper area where the liver is located.
Hepatitis C is more likely than other forms of hepatitis to progress into chronic hepatitis and result in serious complications, such as liver damage, cirrhosis of the liver, liver cancer, and liver failure.
Symptoms of liver damage and cirrhosis of the liver include jaundice, a yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes. A build-up of extra fluid in the legs (edema) or abdomen (ascites) can also occur.
Symptoms of liver failure include jaundice, easy bruising, edema, and ascites. Blood pressure can rise in the abdomen, resulting in portal hypertension, which causes the veins of the esophagus to swell. These bulging veins are called esophageal varices, and they can burst, leading to life-threatening hemorrhage.
In addition, the diseased liver may be unable to filter toxins, which can affect the brain. This is called encephalopathy, and it can result in symptoms, such as confusion, personality changes, or poor cognitive functioning....more about Hepatitis C »
