Glossary for HIV-1, CRF38_BF

  • AIDS Dementia Complex: A brain disorder that occurs in AIDS patients.
  • Chills: Excessive feeling of coldness.
  • Conditions involving a pathogen: Medical conditions involving some type of pathogen, such as a virus or bacteria.
  • Death: The cessation of life
  • Depression: Various syndromes with excessive anxiety, phobias, or fear.
  • Extreme fatigue: A condition characterized by extreme tiredness
  • Flu-like conditions: Medical conditions similar to flu, or exhibition flu-like symptoms.
  • Flu-like symptoms: Symptoms similar to flu including fever
  • HIV-1A3: HIV is an immune system disease caused by the HIV virus. AIDS is a term used when a person infected with HIV has a CD4+ T cell count below 200 or 14% of lymphocytes. AIDS is an advanced form of HIV. To be classified as AIDS the person must also have an AIDS-related condition such as opportunistic infections. Once a person has been diagnosed with AIDS, even if treatment improved their CD4+ T cell count and infections are under control, the person is still considered to have AIDS. HIV is classified into two subtypes - HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-1 is further classified into three groups - Group M, N and O. Group M is further classified into 9 subgroups - A to K and CRFs. HIV-1A3 is a subtype of HIV-1A.
  • HIV/AIDS: HIV is a sexually transmitted virus and AIDS is the progressive immune failure that HIV causes.
  • Immune disorders: Disorders that affect the immune system
  • Malabsorption: Failure to digest nutrients properly
  • Peripheral neuropathy: Peripheral neuropathy is the term for damage to nerves of the peripheral nervous system, which may be caused either by diseases of the nerve or from the side-effects of systemic illness.
  • Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy: Progressive degenerative condition of the brain.
  • Rash: General name for any type of skin inflammation.
  • Sexually Transmitted Diseases: Various diseases spread by sexual contact.
  • Thrombocytopenia: Decreased platelets in the blood
  • Viral diseases: Any disease that is caused by a virus
  • Wasting Syndrome: AIDS related wasting syndrome is the involuntary loss of more than 10% of the body weight plus more than 30 days of either diarrhoea or weakness and fever. It is linked to disease progression and death.
  • Weakness: Symptoms causing weakness of the body
