Glossary for HTLV

  • Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma: Rare cancer of the immune system T-cells.
  • Amyloidosis: A rare group of metabolic disorders where a protein called amyloid accumulates in body organs and tissues where it can cause damage and is potentially fatal. Symptoms depend on the organs involved. There are numerous forms of the condition: primary amyloidosis, secondary amyloidosis, hemodialysis-associated amyloidosis and familial amyloidosis.
  • B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia: A slow progressing disease involving cancerous B-cell lymphocytes which take over the healthy cells in the lymph nodes. B-cells help the body to fight infections so when the disease becomes more advanced, the body is less able to fight infection as there are fewer healthy, functioning B-cells.
  • Carrier conditions: A condition where a person is symptom-free despite a genetic or infectious disease
  • Conditions involving a pathogen: Medical conditions involving some type of pathogen, such as a virus or bacteria.
  • Diseases contagious from intravenous needles: Diseases that can be contracted from intravenous needles
  • Diseases contagious from sex: Diseases that can be contracted through sexual contact
  • Diseases contagious from vaginal sex: Diseases that can be contracted through the act of vaginal sex
  • HTLV-1: Virus affecting the immune system and associated with a particular leukemia/lymphoma.
  • HTLV-2: Human T-lymphotrophic virus 2
  • Hairy cell leukemia: A chronic leukemia which causes an excess of abnormal mononuclear cells which appear hair like under microscopy
  • Immune disorders: Disorders that affect the immune system
  • Leukemia: Cancer of the blood cells, usually white blood cells.
  • Lymphoma: Cancer involving lymph nodes and the immune system.
  • Muscle symptoms: Symptoms affecting the muscles of the body
  • Myelopathy: Myelopathy is any disease process that effects the spinal cord.
  • No symptoms: The absence of noticable symptoms.
  • Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma: A type of lymphoma, a cancer affecting lymph nodes and the immune system.
  • Sarcoidosis: Rare autoimmune disease usually affecting the lungs.
  • Sexually Transmitted Diseases: Various diseases spread by sexual contact.
  • Viral diseases: Any disease that is caused by a virus
