Symptoms of Huntington's Disease: Introduction

The symptoms of Huntington's disease generally advance slowly and affect behavior, emotion, motor skills, and cognitive functioning. The way that symptoms of Huntington's disease develop varies between individuals. However, every person with Huntington's disease ultimately becomes permanently and completely disabled.

Behavioral or emotional symptoms include mood swings, depression, anxiety, irritability, aggression, uncontrolled outbursts and social withdrawal.

Cognitive symptoms of Huntington's disease include short-term memory loss, and problems with organization and concentration.

Motor symptoms of Huntington's disease include fidgeting, loss of coordination, twitching, swallowing difficulties, poor balance, loss of ability to walk, and the development of involuntary movements called chorea or dystonia.
