Hyperthyroidism is caused by the release of too much thyroxine and triiodothyronine from the thyroid gland, primarily due to Graves' disease, which is an autoimmune disease characterized by an enlarged thyroid gland. Other causes include viral thyroiditis, excess dietary iodine, benign (noncancerous) tumors of the thyroid gland or pituitary gland and ovarian tumors.
