Symptoms of Intestinal Conditions

Symptoms of Intestinal Conditions: Introduction

Symptoms of intestinal conditions vary greatly in severity and nature. The nature of symptoms depends on the specific underlying disease or disorder, the presence of complications, and other factors. Some people with certain intestinal conditions, such as colorectal cancer may have no symptoms in early stages of the disease.

Symptoms may include diarrhea, abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, vomiting, fever, and a change in bowel habits. Other symptoms that may accompany intestinal conditions can include weakness, malnutrition, weight loss, bloating, gas and belching, flu-like symptoms, fatigue and black and tarry looking stools that contain blood (melana).

A complication of intestinal conditions that produce vomiting or diarrhea is dehydration. If untreated, severe dehydration can lead to an electrolyte imbalance and shock.

Another life-threatening complication of some intestinal conditions is intestinal obstruction. Intestinal obstruction can result from such diseases and conditions as intestinal stenosis, volvulus, Hirschsprung's disease, diaphragmatic hernia, surgical adhesions, paralytic ileus and intussusception.

Intestinal malignancy can grow and spread to other areas of the body and be fatal.

Bloody stool, vomiting blood or black and tarry looking stools that contain blood (melana) can be symptoms of serious, even life-threatening, conditions. These conditions are a medical emergency that should be immediately evaluated in an emergency setting....more about Intestinal Conditions »
