Itching generally stimulates a strong desire to scratch the area that itches. Itching may occur alone without other symptoms. Symptoms that do accompany itching vary depending on the underlying cause.

Common symptoms that occur with allergy-related itching include rash, runny nose, sneezing, hives, rash and red eyes. Symptoms of food allergies that can cause itching include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Symptoms of life-threatening complications of allergic reactions, such as anaphylaxis and allergic purpura, include wheezing, shortness of breath, swollen joints, bloody stool, swelling of the face, tongue or throat, confusion and shock.

Other symptoms that occur with itching may include yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice) and cheesy vaginal discharge.
