Symptoms of Kawasaki disease: Introduction

Symptoms and manifestations of Kawasaki disease can appear in many areas of the body and complications can be serious, even life-threatening.

Kawasaki disease occurs in children, generally under age five. It typically begins with a high fever, up to 104 degrees F, that lasts five or more days. Unlike fevers due to many other causes, the fever associated with Kawasaki disease does not come down with usual doses of acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil).

Other symptoms commonly affect in the mucus membranes and lymph nodes. Symptoms that occur in the mucus membranes include very red and chapped lips, very red appearance of the mouth, seriously bloodshot eyes and a strawberry tongue. This is a tongue that has a white coating with very large red bumps on the back of the tongue.

Symptoms that occur to the lymph nodes include swollen glands (lymph edema), especially in the neck.

Other symptoms can affect the skin. These include redness of the palms and soles of the feet, peeling skin on the hands, feet and genital area, and skin rashes that do not blister.

Painful swollen joints can occur, as well as swelling of the hands and feet. General symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, runny nose, irritability, and cough.

Complications can be serious, even life-threatening. Complications include vasculitis of the coronary arteries. Vasculitis is an inflammation of the blood vessels that can lead to serious complications, such as aneurysms and heart attack.
