Amyloidosis and Kidney Disease: NIDDK (Excerpt)
Normal
kidneys filter excess proteins from the blood, thus preventing
levels from getting too high. When the kidneys don't work properly,
as in patients receiving dialysis, another type of protein called
beta-2-microglobulin may build up in the blood. When this
occurs, beta-2-microglobulin molecules may join together, like the
links of a chain, forming a few very large molecules from many
smaller ones. These large molecules can form deposits and eventually
damage the surrounding tissues and cause great discomfort. This
condition is called dialysis-related amyloidosis (DRA).

Anemia in Kidney Disease and Dialysis: NIDDK (Excerpt)
Anemia may begin to
develop in the early stages of kidney disease, when you still have
20 percent to 50 percent of your normal kidney function. This
partial loss of kidney function is often called chronic renal
insufficiency. Anemia tends to worsen as kidney disease progresses.
End-stage kidney failure, the point at which dialysis or kidney
transplantation becomes necessary, doesn't occur until you have only
about 10 percent of your kidney function remaining. Nearly everyone
with end-stage kidney failure has anemia. (Source: excerpt from Anemia in Kidney Disease and Dialysis: NIDDK)
Growth Failure in Children With Kidney Disease: NIDDK (Excerpt)
If the kidneys are impaired, bones do not get enough calcium to grow.
One reason is that the production of the vitamin D hormone may be
deficient. Impaired kidneys may also let too much phosphorus build up in
the blood; consequently, phosphorus keeps calcium from getting to the
bones.
