Treatments for Liver fibrosis
- Once thought that fibrosis was irreversible, but more recent research indicates that treatment of the disease causing fibrosis can stop fibrosis can slow or halt fibrosis progression
- In fibrosis of the liver treatment of the underlying disease process may slow or halt progression of the liver damage. However, treatment of established cirrhosis is aimed at management of complications, as well as management of chronic poor health related to liver dysfunction. Treatments include:
- Treatment of the underlying disease process - eg Wilson's disease, hemochromatosis, hepatitis
- Abstinence from alcohol - which may worsen liver function even if alcohol abuse is not the underlying aetiology
- Nutrition - supplements may be needed to ensure adequate calories and protein
