Article Excerpts about Marburg virus
Marburg hemorrhagic fever is a rare, severe type of hemorrhagic fever which affects both
humans and non-human primates. Caused by a genetically unique zoonotic (that is,
animal-borne) RNA virus of the filovirus family, its recognition led to the creation of
this virus family. The four species of Ebola virus are the only other known members of the
filovirus family. (Source: excerpt from Marburg Hemorrhagic Fever: DVRD)
Definitions of Marburg virus:
The type species of FILOVIRUS associated with severe illness in workers handling tissues of African green monkeys.
- (Source - Diseases Database)
A filovirus that causes Marburg disease; carried by animals; can be used as a bioweapon
- (Source - WordNet 2.1)
Marburg virus is listed as a "rare disease" by the Office of
Rare Diseases (ORD) of the National Institutes of Health
(NIH). This means that Marburg virus, or a subtype of Marburg virus,
affects less than 200,000 people in the US population.
