Glossary for Marchiafava-Bignami disease

  • Apathy: When an individual has a lack of feeling and emotion
  • Central pontine myelinolysis: A rare condition where the protective layer around brainstem nerve cells is destroyed which prevents nerve signals being transmitted properly. It generally occurs in response to a rapid change in sodium levels in the body which can be caused by treatment of various conditions or by various conditions that cause rapid sodium level changes.
  • Coma: Prolonged unconsciousness
  • Convulsions: Involuntary spasms especially those affecting the full body
  • Drug-related conditions: Medical conditions related to drug usage, including adverse reactions, intoxication, and overdose.
  • Excitement: The sensation of increased anxiety and anticipation
  • Mental changes: Any change to ones personality due to mental illness
  • Movement symptoms: Changes to movement or motor abilities
  • Nervous system conditions: Diseases affecting the nerves and the nervous system.
  • Nutritional conditions: Medical conditions related to nutrition, including nutritional deficiencies.
  • Speaking difficulty: The occurrence of difficulty communicating through speech
  • Tremors: Involuntary trembling most commonly of the hands.
