Glossary for Mastalgia

  • Breast Cancer: Cancer of the breast.
  • Breast Feeding: Nursing an infant with breast milk.
  • Breast abscess: Pus-filled abscess in the breast
  • Breast conditions: Any condition affecting the breast
  • Breast pain: Pain in or near the breasts (mastodynia)
  • Breast tenderness: A feeling of tenderness located anatomically in the breast
  • Cyclical mastalgia: Cyclical mastalgia is periodic episodes of breast pain.
  • Danazol -- Teratogenic Agent: There is evidence to indicate that exposure to Danazol (used to treat endometriosis) during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus. A teratogen is a substance that can cause birth defects. The likelihood and severity of defects may be affected by the level of exposure and the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at.
  • Ethinyl Estradiol -- Teratogenic Agent: There is evidence to indicate that exposure to Ethinylestradiol (an estrogen medication) during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus. A teratogen is a substance that can cause birth defects. The likelihood and severity of defects may be affected by the level of exposure and the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at.
  • Fibroadenoma: Benign tumor containing fibrous tissues and glands (common in breasts)
  • Fibrocystic breasts: The development of benign fluid-filled cysts in the breasts as well as scar-like tissue. The cysts can make breast cancer examinations more difficult.
  • Gynecomastia: Enlarged male breasts
  • Human carcinogen -Tamoxifen: Tamoxifen is a drug used to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer but is also deemed to be carcinogenic to humans as it increases the risk of developing other cancers. The carcinogenicity of the substance may be influenced by the duration and level of exposure. Tamoxifen exposure is associated mainly with an increased risk of developing uterine cancer.
  • Inflammatory breast cancer: Inflammatory breast cancer is a rare and aggressive form of invasive breast cancer, where the skin of the breast becomes red, inflamed and pitted in appearance.
  • Injury: Any damage inflicted in the body
  • Intertrigo: Skin inflammation from rubbing together of two skin areas
  • Mastitis: Infected breast common in nursing mothers
  • Mastodynia: Pain that is located in the breast
  • Paget's Disease: Breast carcinoma involving nipple and areola.
  • Pain conditions: Diseases characterized by pain and pain-like symptoms.
  • Pregnancy: The condition of supporting a fetus from conception till birth.
  • Premenstrual syndrome: Condition with cyclic symptoms related to menstruation.
  • Shingles: Infectious viral infection occuring years after chickenpox infection.
  • Spironolactone -- Teratogenic Agent: There is evidence to indicate that exposure to Spironolactone during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus. A teratogen is a substance that can cause birth defects. The likelihood and severity of defects may be affected by the level of exposure and the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at.
