Early symptoms of the measles may be mild and include a runny nose, irritability, and red, runny eyes. Symptoms also include a hacking cough, swollen glands (lymphedema), fever, diarrhea, and white spots of the mouth called Koplik's spots.
The skin rash typical of measles develops after about four or five days of illness. This rash is made up of tiny flat pink spots that first develop on the forehead and behind the ears. The rash then spreads to the face, neck and to the rest of the body.
When the symptoms of the measles break down the body's defences and strength, bacteria can invade the body, reproduce unchecked, and cause serious, even life-threatening infections. These include ear infection, pneumonia, acute bronchitis, and encephalitis. Symptoms of these complications include ear pain, fever, headache, and change in level of consciousness.
