Glossary for Mediastinitis

  • Anthrax meningitis: Anthrax meningitis is an infectious disease caused by breathing in the spores of the bacteria Bacillus anthracis.
  • Chest conditions: Any condition affecting the chest
  • Chest pain: Pain in the chest area.
  • Chills: Excessive feeling of coldness.
  • Death: The cessation of life
  • Epigastric pain: Pain located in the upper and middle region of the abdomen
  • Fever: Elevation of the body temperature above the normal 37 degrees celsius
  • Histoplasmosis: Lung infection from fungus Histoplasma capsulatum
  • Inflammatory conditions that may be pathogenic or non-pathogenic: Medical conditions causing inflammation, whether due to a pathogen (e.g. bacteria, virus), or a systemic or other cause.
  • Retropharyngeal abscess: An abscess (pus-filled cavity) in the back of the throat. Prompt treatment is needed to avoid obstruction of airways and other complications including death.
  • Shock: Severe condition from reduced blood circulation
  • Zenker's diverticulum: Zenker's diverticulum, is a diverticulum of the mucosa of the pharynx, just above the cricopharyngeal muscle.
