Glossary for Megaloblastic Anemia, Familial

  • Congenital conditions: Any condition that you are born with such as birth defects or genetic diseases.
  • Congenital metabolic disorders: Congenital (birth) defects affecting any metabolic systems.
  • Deficiency conditions: Medical conditions related to a nutritional deficiency.
  • Digestive Diseases: Diseases that affect the digestive system
  • Digestive symptoms: Any symptoms affecting the digestive tract.
  • Failure to thrive: Slow growth or inadequate weight gain of an infant or child.
  • Fatigue: Excessive tiredness or weakness.
  • Genetic Disease: Any disease that is handed down to oneself through the chromosomes of ones parents
  • Nutritional conditions: Medical conditions related to nutrition, including nutritional deficiencies.
  • Paleness: Whitening or pallor of the skin
  • Permanent brain damage: A condition which is characterized by damage to the brains function that is permanent in nature

  • Vitamin B12 Deficiency: A deficiency of Vitamin B12 primarily causes anemias the body is unable to make sufficient quantities of normal red blood cells. Severe cases can lead to permanent nervous system problems. The vitamin B12 deficiency can result from absorption problems, insufficient dietary intake, certain medications (e.g. metformin), inherited conditions (e.g. transcobalamin deficiency) and certain chronic parasitic intestinal infestations.
