Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis: A rare kidney disorder characterized by impaired kidney function due to inflammation and changes to the cells that make up the kidneys which affects it's ability to function as a filtering organ. More detailed information about the symptoms, causes, and treatments of Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis is available below.

Symptoms of Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis

Treatments for Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis

  • Treatment of membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis is dependant upon the cause of the disease, whether it is acute or chronic, the severity of renal impairment, as well as the age and comorbidities of the patient. Treatments include:
    • Antibiotics - for GN associated with infection
    • Antivirals - for GN associated with viral illnesses such as Hepatitis B and C
    • Antiprotozoals - for GN associated with protozoan infection
    • Corticosteroids and immunosuppressants - may have a role in autoimmune disease

Article Excerpts about Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis

A disease that occurs primarily in children and young adults. Over time, inflammation leads to scarring in the glomeruli , causing proteinuria , hematuria , and sometimes chronic renal failure or end-stage renal disease . (Source: excerpt from Kidney Failure Glossary: NIDDK)

Definitions of Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis:

Chronic glomerulonephritis characterized histologically by proliferation of mesangial cells, increase in the mesangial matrix, and a thickening of the glomerular capillary walls. The wall thickening is sometimes said to be a result of the interposition of mesangial cytoplasm or matrix between the basement membrane and the endothelium of the capillary wall. It is often divided into types I and II, and sometimes III. Pathogenesis is not well understood, but some types are thought to involve the immune system, with the complement system, in particular, being implicated. - (Source - Diseases Database)
