Glossary for Mental retardation, X-linked, Reish type

  • Brain symptoms: Symptoms affecting the brain
  • Conductive hearing loss: Hearing loss due to a defect in the external auditory canal or middle ear.
  • Ear anomalies: Ear anomalies are any type of deformity, unusual formation of the ear.
  • Ectodermal dysplasia: A group of rare inherited conditions which affect the ectodermal skin layer which includes the skin, hair, teeth and nails.
  • Genetic Disease: Any disease that is handed down to oneself through the chromosomes of ones parents
  • Hirschsprung disease: A condition which is characterized by the congenital dilation and hypertropohy of the colon
  • Hydrocephalus: A rare condition where the normal flow of cerebrospinal fluid is impaired by dilated brain ventricles which causes the fluid to accumulate in the skull and hence result in increased brain pressure.
  • Intellectual or developmental disabilities: Disorders of physical or intellectual development.
  • Intrauterine Growth Retardation: Slowly growing fetus in the womb during pregnancy
  • Mental retardation: A very rare syndrome characterized mainly by mental retardation, hypogonadism, diabetes and facial and skull abnormalities.
  • Mental retardation conditions: Medical conditions related to or causing mental retardation.
  • Microcephaly: Small head circumference
  • Polydactyly: A rare deformity where the hands and/or feet have extra digits.
  • Scoliosis: Sideways curvature of the spine
  • Sensorineural hearing loss: Hearing loss due to abnormal functioning or damage to the hearing nerve or the cochlea (inner ear) or the part of the brain that processes sound. The hearing problem may be present at birth or may be acquired through such things as aging, excessive noise or diseases such as meningitis.
  • Skeletal deformities: Skeletal deformities are anomalies or malformations of the bones.
