Glossary for Mental retardation, X-linked, Shrimpton type

  • Genetic Disease: Any disease that is handed down to oneself through the chromosomes of ones parents
  • Intellectual or developmental disabilities: Disorders of physical or intellectual development.
  • MRXS9: A type of mental retardation syndrome characterized mainly by mental retardation, short stature, small head and strabismus. The genetic defect that causes the syndrome is located on chromosome Xq12-q21.31. As the disorder originates from a defect on the X chromosome, only males suffer the full effect of the disorder whereas female carriers are asymptomatic or suffer learning disabilities.
  • Mental retardation: A very rare syndrome characterized mainly by mental retardation, hypogonadism, diabetes and facial and skull abnormalities.
  • Mental retardation conditions: Medical conditions related to or causing mental retardation.
  • Short stature: A rare syndrome characterized mainly by the association of short stature, Pierre Robin sequence, cleft mandible, hand anomalies and clubfoot.
  • Small head: The occurrence of a head which is smaller than normal
  • Strabismus: Eyes not moving together properly
