Glossary for Methahemoglobinemia

  • Acetanilide -- Teratogenic Agent: Experimental studies on mice indicate that the use of Acetanilide during pregnancy may cause reduced fertility in the offsprint. The likelihood and severity of symptoms may be affected by the level of exposure and the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at. The effect on human fetuses has not been conclusively determined.
  • Blood conditions: Conditions that affect the blood
  • Blue lips: Blueness or discoloration of the lips
  • Blue nails: A condition which is characterized by the occurrence of nails that are blue in appearance
  • Cyanosis: Blueness or purple coloring of skin.
  • Earlobe symptoms: Symptoms affecting the earlobe
  • Headache: In medicine a headache or cephalalgia is a symptom of a number of different conditions of the head and sometimes neck. Some of the causes are benign while others are medical emergencies. It ranks among the most common pain complaints
  • Heart failure: Slow failure of the heart (cardiac insufficiency).
  • Human carcinogen -- Phenacetin: Phenacetin (a drug) is deemed to be carcinogenic to humans. The carcinogenicity of the substance may be influenced by the duration and level of exposure.
  • Hypoventilation: Occurs when there is a reduction in the amount of air entering into the pulmonary alveoli
  • Methylene blue -- Teratogenic Agent: There is evidence to indicate that exposure to Methylene blue during pregnancy may have a teratogenic effect on the fetus. A teratogen is a substance that can cause birth defects. The likelihood and severity of defects may be affected by the level of exposure and the stage of pregnancy that the exposure occurred at.
  • Possible human carcinogenic exposure -- Nitrobenzene: Some evidence indicates that exposure to Nitrobenzene has a possible link to an increased risk of developing cancer in humans. The carcinogenicity of the substance may be influenced by the duration and level of exposure. Nitrobenzene is used to make other chemicals, dyes, synthetic rubbers and pharmaceuticals and can be found in products such as soaps and shoe polish.
  • Tiredness: Feeling tired either physically or mentally
