Microvascular Complications of Diabetes, Susceptibility to, 7
Microvascular Complications of Diabetes, Susceptibility to, 7: Introduction
Microvascular Complications of Diabetes, Susceptibility to, 7: Diabetics are prone to developing microvascular complications and experts have now discovered a number of genetic defects which may predispose diabetics to developing these complications. Seven genetic defects have so far been described. In type 7, the genetic defect is linked to chromosome 6p21.3 and it appears to increase the risk of diabetic kidney and eye disease in particular.

Treatments for Microvascular Complications of Diabetes, Susceptibility to, 7
- Complications should be treated as they develop but it is critical that diabetics treat their condition aggressively and regularly monitor for developing complications
- Treatment of microvascular complications of diabetes involves many treatment strategies, and specific management depends upon the age and other health problems that the patient might have, the location and degree of end organ damage, and the wishes of the patient. General treatment options aimed at prevention or slowing of progression of microvascular disease include:
- Strict control of blood sugars, including dietary therapy, oral hypoglycaemics and/or insulin, combined with regular blood glucose monitoring
- Regular diabetic reviews, including monitoring of kidney function, eye checks, monitoring of feet and peripheral circulation, and neurovascular status
- Preventative medication such as prophylactic use of ACE inhibitors to slow progression of kidney disease, and use of lipid lowering agents to decrease risk of macrovascular and microvascular complications such as cardiovascular, neurovascular and peripheral vascular disease
