Symptoms of Middle ear infection

Symptoms of Middle ear infection: Introduction

Symptoms of a middle ear infection can vary in severity and nature between individuals and can differ depending on the specific type of middle ear infection: acute otitis media or chronic otitis media.

Symptoms of an acute otitis media include ear pain, a feeling of fullness in the ear, fever, chills and hearing loss. Infants and young children may tug at their ear, and they may be irritable and not feed or sleep well.

An untreated acute otitis media can lead to rupture of the eardrum, resulting in a seepage of pus and blood from the ear canal. The ear pain generally resolves after an eardrum has ruptured. There may also be pus that drains from the ear in chronic otitis media.

Complications of some middle ear infections can include the development of Bell's palsy, chronic otitis media, ruptured eardrum, deafness, brain abscess, meningitis and enlarged adenoids....more about Middle ear infection »
