Glossary for Mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalopathy syndrome

  • Abdominal Pain: A condition which is characterized by the sensation of pain that is located in the abdomen
  • Abdominal conditions: Medical conditions affecting the abdominal region.
  • Blepharoptosis: Droopy upper eyelid. The condition may be caused by such things as stroke, brain tumor, diabetes and myasthenia gravis.
  • Bowel Obstruction: Blockage in the bowel of the digestive tract.

  • Digestive Diseases: Diseases that affect the digestive system
  • Droopy eye-lid: Droopiness of the eyelids (ptosis)

  • Intestinal pseudo-obstruction: A digestive disorder where the intestines are unable to contract normally and push food through the digestive system. This results in symptoms similar to an obstruction and hence the name pseudo-obstruction. The walls of the affected gastrointestinal tract becomes thin and the muscles that control its motion start to degenerate.
  • Kwashiorkor: A malnutrition state that is produced by severe protein deficiency
  • Megacolon: Extreme bowel distention
  • Metabolic disorders: Disorders that affect the metabolic system in human
  • Mitochondrial diseases: Any of a group of mitochondrial disorders affecting cell metabolism and especially muscles.
  • Mungan syndrome: A recessively inherited disorder characterized by heart abnormalities and gastrointestinal abnormalities. Death has occurred in some cases during the late teenage years.
  • Myopathy: General name for any disease of the muscles.
  • Nervous system conditions: Diseases affecting the nerves and the nervous system.
  • Peripheral neuropathy: Peripheral neuropathy is the term for damage to nerves of the peripheral nervous system, which may be caused either by diseases of the nerve or from the side-effects of systemic illness.
  • Polyneuropathy -- Ophthalmoplegia -- Leukoencehalopathy -- Intestinal Pseudo-Obstruction: A rare genetic disorder which affects a number of body systems and manifests results in symptoms such as droopy eyelids, progressive eye muscle weakness, gastrointestinal dysmotility, brain disease, thin body, peripheral neuropathy and muscle disease.
  • Scleroderma sine scleroderma: A very rare condition where the organ involvement normally associated with scleroderma is present but there are none of the characteristic skin symptoms. The degree of organ involvement is variable.
